Background of the Study
Electoral malpractice refers to any illegal or unethical activity that undermines the integrity of the electoral process. In Nigeria, electoral malpractices, such as vote buying, ballot stuffing, election rigging, and intimidation, have been persistent problems that hinder the legitimacy of elections and erode public trust in democratic institutions (Akinyemi & Usman, 2024). In Argungu Local Government Area (LGA) of Kebbi State, electoral malpractices have been reported to significantly affect the political landscape, resulting in flawed electoral outcomes and diminished citizen participation in the democratic process (Sulaimon & Musa, 2023). These malpractices undermine the core principles of democracy, such as fairness, transparency, and the right of citizens to elect their representatives freely. The consequences of electoral malpractice extend beyond the immediate impact on election results and include a long-term weakening of democratic norms, political disengagement, and the consolidation of undemocratic practices (Akinola & Ibrahim, 2023). This study aims to examine the impact of electoral malpractice on democracy in Argungu LGA, focusing on the extent to which these practices affect voter confidence, electoral outcomes, and the overall health of democracy in the region.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Electoral malpractices have plagued the electoral process in many parts of Nigeria, and Argungu LGA is no exception. These practices have led to questions about the credibility of elections in the area and the ability of democracy to thrive under such conditions. This study seeks to explore how electoral malpractice affects democratic processes in Argungu and to assess the long-term implications of these practices on democratic consolidation in the region.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the prevalence and types of electoral malpractices in Argungu Local Government Area.

  2. To evaluate the impact of electoral malpractice on voter confidence and participation in elections in Argungu LGA.

  3. To examine the consequences of electoral malpractice on the overall democratic process in Argungu Local Government Area.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What types of electoral malpractices occur in Argungu Local Government Area?

  2. How do electoral malpractices affect voter confidence and participation in elections in Argungu?

  3. What are the long-term consequences of electoral malpractices on democracy in Argungu LGA?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Electoral malpractices significantly reduce voter confidence in the electoral process in Argungu LGA.

  2. The prevalence of electoral malpractices leads to lower voter turnout in elections in Argungu LGA.

  3. Electoral malpractices contribute to the erosion of democratic norms and practices in Argungu Local Government Area.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide a critical examination of the role of electoral malpractices in undermining democratic processes, specifically within the context of Argungu LGA. It will offer valuable insights into how such practices affect voter behavior and democratic consolidation. The findings will be useful for policymakers, electoral bodies, and civil society organizations in developing strategies to mitigate electoral fraud and ensure the integrity of the electoral process, not only in Argungu but in other parts of Nigeria as well.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the impact of electoral malpractices on democracy in Argungu Local Government Area, Kebbi State. It will specifically examine how these practices influence voter behavior, participation, and democratic development within the region. The limitations of the study include the difficulty in obtaining firsthand data from participants who may be reluctant to disclose information due to fear of political repercussions or intimidation.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Electoral Malpractice: Any illegal or unethical activity that compromises the fairness and integrity of the electoral process.
